Luftbild Ostseefjord Schlei, Stadt Arnis - kleinste Stadt Deutschlands - Perle an der Schlei | Nach dem Zweiten Schleswigschen Krieg (1864) verlor Arnis jedoch seine traditionellen Handelsrouten, und die Konkurrenz durch Dampfschiffe führte zum Niedergang der Segelschifffahrt. Die Einwohnerzahl sank bis 1927 auf etwa 500, und 1933 nur noch auf 280. Die Provinzialregierung bezeichnete Arnis 1885 bereits als „trauriges Beispiel“ eines verfallenden Fleckens.
